An adult mink is about 24 inches, and its tail is about 6-8 inches in length. It usually weighs about 1-3 pounds. The female adult minks are about 1/4 smaller. They are about 18-22 inches, and they weigh about 1.5-2.5 pounds. A mink smells horrible because its anal glands let out a horrible stench when the mink is afraid. Alaskan minks are the largest, and they have high-quality light fur. A mink has 5 toes, but the smallest toe in the foot is rarely seen in tracks. Their tracks are very similar to the gray squirrel's tracks. Minks have whiskers, but they are difficult to see. Domestic minks vary in many colors, but wild minks are usually brown to black. Minks always have a white spot on heir chest and under their chin. The back of mink is darker that the front. It has dense under fur, and it has long, lustrous guard hairs. The mink mots twice a year. The winter coat is thick and dark. It molts in the spring into a flatter, browner coat. The flatter coat molts in August or September.
